It is indeed a sad day. Barack Obama's grandmother, who raised the presidential candidate for much of the life has died, Obama announced Monday, one day before the election. Madelyn Payne Dunham was 86. Obama announced the news from the campaign trail in Charlotte, N.C. The joint statement with his sister Maya Soetoro-Ng said Dunham died late Sunday at her Honolulu apartment after a battle with cancer."She's gone home," Obama said as tens of thousands of rowdy supporters at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte grew silent in an evening drizzle. And she died peacefully in her sleep with my sister at her side. And so there is great joy as well as tears. I'm not going to talk about it too long because it is hard for me to talk about."

I was so saddened to hear this that I don't even know what to say.
Oh this chokes me up. And it reminds me of my grandmothers who, thankfully, were huge influences morally and ethiclally for me growing up. I hope she enjoyed his campaign and his personal and professional accomplishments...we know she really must have. I bet this timing is going to keep Obama grounded today though. He will be thinking of her all day and I'd like to believe it will keep him centered and real.
I am making a roast chicken, with fresh herbs, brussel sprouts, butternut squash...and we have some wine. Stagg has tomorrow off work so we can stay up till west coast polls close and results come in, and listen to pundits. I have some tears building up as I type this message to you. And I keep having chills go up or down my spine. Oprah has a two dya election special, the first I am going to watch ina few minutes.
I feel a strange bond across miles and the country with anyone else who is praying for the outcome today.

Candy, I wish I was at your house tonight :-D The meal sounds absolutely delicious and the wine too! Canada is strangly connected to the United States,. I consider it our kinder, gentler, neighbor to the north. What is good for the U.S is usually good for Canada. Let's hope we can turn the tear have welling up to tears of joy tonight WHEN WE ELECT SENATOR OBAMA OUR NEXT PRESIDENT!!! Save me some of that squash and wine (lol).
