Here are some of the quotes overheard at last night's Grammy Award Show.
"You know it's been 43 years since the first and only time that a jazz artist got the album of the year award. I'd like to thank the academy for courageously breaking the mold this time. — Herbie Hancock on winning the album of the year award for "River: The Joni Letters."
"The record of the year is the ultimate Grammy. It means that you had yourself a pretty big slammy." — will.i.am during his medley of record-of-the-year winners.
"I just got an award given to me by a Beatle. Have you had that happen yet, Kanye? ... Just kidding." — Vince Gill, accepting the award for best country album from Ringo Starr.
"I appreciate everything and I know you are really proud of me right now and I know you wouldn't want me to stop and you'd want me to be the No. 1 artist in the world. And Mama, all I'm gonna do is keep making you proud." — Kanye West, speaking about his late mother as he accepted the award for rap album.
"It's a pity Amy isn't here, but oh well, God bless her." — Ringo Starr on Grammy winner Amy Winehouse, who couldn't obtain a visa in time to attend the show.
"I think it's a great, great song, I think it's a great, brilliantly produced album and I think we all hope she gets better." — Josh Groban on Amy Winehouse.
"She's walking her walk. We all have a walk in life, we have hard and difficult times and going through that chaos often leads to clarity." — Chaka Khan on Amy Winehouse.
"Dad, I know I promised I'd give you my first Grammy, but we might have to fight for this one." — Rihanna accepting the award for rap/sung collaboration.
"As many of you know, I first started singing when Lincoln was president." — Cher, 61, as she introduced Beyonce and Tina Turner.
"Frank Sinatra looked good for 150, didn't he?"_ Prince, after Sinatra appeared in archival footage in a duet with Alicia Keys.
"I think she is a sexy young lady. I have kids as old as her, but I did enjoy it. That did not deter me from noticing at all." — Morris Day on Rihanna, after his band, The Time, performed a medley with the young R&B star.
“ I am not happy about Amy Winehouse winning because it sends a message that bad behavior is rewarded…I do wish her luck in getting herself together” – Natalie Cole on Amy Winehouse win.

I thought that Natalie Cole's comments about Amy Winehouse were way off base. I wonder if Natalie won any awards when she was doing coke and smack and if so, does she plan on returning them?
The fact that Amy is an f***up shouldn't obscure the fact that she is talented. I am glad that the Grammy voters didn't hold her personal missteps against her.
When Natalie won "Best New Artist" she was a crackhead! Clarence and I reflected on her background and decided though some of what she said was true (she actually said more than I wrote) is she the one to be saying it. Natalie f**ked up so bad that her mother had to literally put her on locked down and take power of attorney over Natalie. I would say she was hating on youth, but then I remember last year when she stated that she was rooting for Corinne Bailey Rae to win "Best New Artist". I recorded this concert yesterday of Amy Winehouse...She reminds me of a cross between Macy Gray and Erykah Badu. I think she was high too.
The comparison of Amy to Macy and Erykah is a good one. I watched the entire clip of Natalie's comments about Amy on Yahoo yesterday. Like you and Clarence said, is she the one to be saying it?
Even though I was kind of shocked when I heard Natalie's statements, I couldn't agree more. Increasingly, we live in a society which appears to go out its way to reward bad, ignorant, self-indulgent, self-destructive behavior.
I don't think NC's remarks took anything way from Amy's "talents" such as they are (smile). I think AW's sound is interesting, though I've only really heard the "Rehab" song. But I don't she's any new queen of soul, like some were/are trying to prop her up to be.
I'd love to hear NC elaborate on her remarks and her own past. While I will refrain from juding either ladies too harshly (we've all got our issues), I do think AW might do well to clean herself up and eat a couple of sandwiches. That crackhead look really ain't working for her . . .
Hey Malcolm, I don't care much for hypocrites.
Lori, I couldn't agree more about Amy and her self-indulgent crackhead behavior. However I did not take Ms. Cole's comments out of context. You'll notice that several comments were made regarding Ms. Winehouse, including one by Chaka Khan (who has also traveled the road of drug addiction) and it seems that Natalie would have a little more empathy and reach out more to the fledgling entertainer.
I'm hoping that the Cole comment was out of context (I didn't catch the Grannies) because I like her. She might not be the best one to criticize, but she did manage to keep most of her troubles out of the public eye, and the comment seems to be more about making an example of someone than their personal woes. Then too, Cole could have been unconsciously criticizing herself by projecting her shortcomings onto someone else.
Otherwise, there was an awful lot of attention paid to Winehouse (of course ehe's a big winner, but I think it was not being able to attend the ceremony that was the big story).
I've given up on award shows. Too bad I didn't know when Morris Day was on. That, I would have loved to have seen.
