This blog is named after a book by Jacqueline Jones Royster. While my goals for this blog are not quite as lofty as Ms. Royster's (promoting literacy and social change) I do intend to address ideas, philosophies, and policies that need to change. Since I consider myself a sociologist I will focus on anything social, which basically covers everything under the sun and then some. Topics will include my take on politics, music, sports, family issues, literature, to name a few.
I am a middle-aged woman who recently relocated to the Dallas area after spending the last sixteen years in Long Beach California. I am originally from Flint, Michigan. Although I have lived in the West and I am currently in the south, my belief system is strongly rooted in my midwestern upbringing.
I enjoy bowling and rollerskating whenever I get the chance. I also spend much of my time reading and listening to music.
Am I the only one to find the idea of a bake good named "Drunken Negro Face Cookies" offensive? I received the below video in an email and it made me angry enough to "chew bricks". The cookies in question were supposedly used to celebrate the Inauguration of President Obama. On that day the cookies were referred to as "Obama Heads". The Greenwich Connecticut baker who sells these cookies does not see why anyone would have a problem with these cookies and that the women (who happen to be Caucasian) who reported the story are overreacting. What do you think? Should all people find this appalling and racist or am I being overly sensitive?

Yes I find the to be very degrading and for a white woman to bring it to the forfront goes back to M.L.K. not the color of our skin but the content of our character his store should be boycotted(at least 30 days)& until he makes a public apology to the world but not ato much pub for his store he has already got enough attention I`m surprised it`s still standing yep a good old boycott to let him know yes it is something wrong with that B***S hit his bank account I bet he will know then.

Kofi Bofah, No it is not cool and what pissed me off to the highest pissivity is that dude seemed not to have a clue!
Uncle Bobby, Dude is foul, that's the bottom line. Yep, Yep, Yep, those you were offended should definitely hit ole boy where it hurts for sure...in the pocketbook. Thanks for reminding me of the Rev. Dr. sentiments about the content of character. Those women did not have to say anything, but they knew it was wrong so they spoke up!
Not only is this degrading, its frightening. The election of out first African-American President would seem to signal that we, as a country, have come a long ways as far as our racial attitudes are concerned. On the other hand, the "Drunken Negro Face Cookies" and a myriad of other responses from members of the majority signals real bitterness on the loosing side. I pray for Mr. Obama ...but I also pray for those who are SOOOOO BITTER.
