This blog is named after a book by Jacqueline Jones Royster. While my goals for this blog are not quite as lofty as Ms. Royster's (promoting literacy and social change) I do intend to address ideas, philosophies, and policies that need to change. Since I consider myself a sociologist I will focus on anything social, which basically covers everything under the sun and then some. Topics will include my take on politics, music, sports, family issues, literature, to name a few.
I am a middle-aged woman who recently relocated to the Dallas area after spending the last sixteen years in Long Beach California. I am originally from Flint, Michigan. Although I have lived in the West and I am currently in the south, my belief system is strongly rooted in my midwestern upbringing.
I enjoy bowling and rollerskating whenever I get the chance. I also spend much of my time reading and listening to music.
Old School Fridays - Songs From The Year Of My Birth
First of all Happy Birthday to Ms. Marvalus from "Marvalus View", Regina from "Regina's Family Seasons" and of course Malcolm from "Pop Culture Dish". Hey people, it's your birthday. We gonna party like it's your birthday. We gon' drink Barcardi like it's your birthday...I digress! Picking songs from my birth year is giving it all away, but what the hell! 1956 was a very good year for music, in fact it is one of the most definitive years in Rock and Roll! I chose three songs that can be heard on the player below: Laverne Baker's "Jim Dandy", Little Willie John's Fever and Gene Vincent's "Be-Bop-A-Lula".
1. Anyone can participate; any music genre 2. Old School is defined as music created before 1999 3. No offensive words allowed, please use edited radio version 4. Post a video of your favorite Old School song to take us back down memory lane 5. Add your name to the meme list so that others can check you out 6. Have fun & don't forget to leave comments for other participants
WICKED! You took us back today! I wanted to get up, get myself a poodle skirt and bop away. I have never heard the song before, but I love it! She has such an aggressive voice.
What you know about this song, I may be younger, but I have an old soul. So Sparkle is my favorite movie of all time, and in the movie they go to a concert series, and guess what song was playing, Jim Dandy
This is one of my favorites, it make me want to get up and juke.
That's where I remember that song from...SPARKLE! You would think it would immediately pop into my mind because it's my favorite movie...but I'm sitting here like, "Where have I heard that before?"
How do you get three songs in one player? I need to research that...
Great picks...and thanks for the birthday shout-out!
I know the entire lyric to this song since I was a kid - lol!
I'm posting a day late since I was on vacation, but thought it would be only "fair" that I, too, tell my age. I promise to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but...
Thanks for the birthday shout out! Wow, I thought "Fever" was a Peggy Lee song! Just kidding. "Be-Bop-A-Lula" is one of my faves from the early days of rock and roll.
Are we there yet?
